New campaign to protect retailers from cyber attack

A new government campaign has been launched to help protect retailers and sole traders against cyber attack.

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has launched Cyber Aware, a initiative to highlight the importance of online safety for small businesses and sole traders.

From today (Friday, February 26, 2021) retailers can receive a personalised plan to help them boost their online security - just by answering a few simple questions.

Basic tips to boost online security include:

  1. Use a strong and separate password for your email
  2. Creat strong passwords using three random words
  3. Save your passwords in your browser
  4. Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA)
  5. Updaate your devices
  6. Back up your data

Further information

What is the NCSC? The NCSC was set up in 2016 to make the UK the safest place to live and work online. We support the most critical organisations in the UK, the wider public sector, industry, SMEs as well as the general public. When incidents do occur, we provide effective incident response to minimise harm to the UK, help with recovery, and learn lessons for the future.

The purpose of the Coffee Cyber Newsletter: SME’s cover a huge range of businesses and make up 99% of all business in the UK.  Often SME’s do not have the budget of large organisations to spend on cyber security. This Newsletter aims to break down cyber related issues into bitesize pieces which can be read in your coffee break.   We want to arm you and your business with the advice and tools to minimise the risk of a cyber-attack.  Each month will cover a different topic and will offer advice and links to further information.

We would like your help: If you think the Newsletter is useful, then please sign up using the link here (link).  We would also really appreciate suggestions for topics you would like covered in up-coming issues.
