It’s time to make this your New Year’s resolution... Remaining positive and caring about one another is key to surviving tough times!

A NEW YEAR has begun and, for most, the festive period has been like no other. I can remember drafting this article at the end of 2020 and I believe my opening introduction was ‘A brand new year brings with it new possibilities. It’s the perfect opportunity to take stock, re-evaluate and purposefully design and grow your organisations and lead the way going forward’. News stations were reporting a vaccine was becoming available, and finally – at the last hour – a trade deal had been struck with Europe.

So, on reflection, was I right to be so hopeful, as we enter lockdown number three with growing coronavirus infection rates, surging hospital admissions and increasing rates of deaths linked to the pandemic? Regarding Brexit, I have already seen instances where the cost of importing and exporting goods and machines has risen primarily due to extra administration burden. It feels like the ‘Happy’ should not be put in front of the ‘New Year’.

The start of 2021 is going to be tough for us all, Covid-19 is having a negative impact on all of our lives both inside and outside work. It is expected that the next few weeks may be the worst of all so we have to, more than ever, be aware of the affect of the virus may be having on those around us and pull together. We must make sure we are looking out for our colleagues and friends. I am acutely aware of how last year has impacted so many people both young and old – particularly on mental health. Have you or your business considered training someone within your organisation to become a mental health first aider? Do you have an understanding of common mental health illnesses, and do you have the confidence to promote awareness of it? Do you know how to spot signs of poor mental health and support positive wellbeing?

As well as fulfilling your legal obligations, training someone would provide them with the practical skills to spot the signs of mental illness and the confidence to step in and support a person who needs assistance. Are you still considering setting a New Year’s resolution? Maybe the above has given you some ideas on how to make an impact on your most valuable asset – your employees.
